Radical Self Love Journal: Halfway Point

DSC_0177Hi friends! I hope you’re having good weeks- I know I am! I wanted to share with you the first half of the journal I’ve been working on based on Gala Darling’s Radical Self Love Bible School prompts.
DSC_0180
Radical Self Love and I have a complicated relationship, but working in this journal and focusing on things I love and having a chance to do some guided introspection has been really fun and worthwhile. DSC_0203
Do we not love these bubble letter stickers?! I got them at Michael’s, and I now can’t find them anywhere online but I love them and I bet you can find them at your local Michaels/ craft storeDSC_0200
This is a quote from an Annie Dillard essay, Living Like Weasels, that I cannot stop thinking about. The dancer on the left is from Frankie, the dancer on the right is from an ABC Carpet & Home ad. The garden behind them is from an Australian interior design magazine. The bodega up the block sells the best magazines and they’re all from Australia or New Zealand. I don’t understand why, but I’ll take it.

This page wound up being one of my favorites. I think I just like writing on pretty backgrounds. I went back and put glitter on the sneakers with Martha Stewart Glitter Glue, which, let me tell you, is the absolute best.   DSC_0182I don’t love this page but I feel really strongly about sharing our “crafting fails,” so here’s something I feel uncomfortable sharing with you! I just don’t think it’s that pretty, but the process of making it helped me learn more about my process.

Have a great rest of the week, sunshines!

Mini Makerie Recap

Embroidery Thread by Teryn

Hi Friends! Today on the blog we have story time (there’s a recap at the end if all you want to do is look at the pictures, I won’t be offended).

A few weeks ago I packed a backpack, set an alarm for 4 AM, and flew across the country to my beautiful home state of Colorado. Why? To take an embroidery class! If you think a 4 AM flight for an embroidery class is a little… drastic, you obviously have never been to a Makerie workshop. I’ve now been to two, and I am here to tell you that Ali and Emily are nothing short of magical. Ali and Emily are like… these amazing fairies who turn everything they touch into creative, magical, special places and we should revere and/or appoint them world dictators. I would be so down to live in a dictatorship as long as it was led by Ali and Emily. That took a weird turn. Onward!

This particular Makerie, the Mini Makerie, was held in my mom’s studio! In our house! I didn’t even have to put on real pants to attend! I did, but I didn’t have to, and if that’s not the dream, I don’t know what it.

Adriana Torres - Miga de Pan

Our teacher, Adriana Torres, makes the most incredible art. She made this sampler for her daughter, and you can really get a sense of her color palette and look from it. Her embroidery is otherworldly- tiny stitches, adorable creatures, and a color palette that somehow perfectly illustrates her. Click over to her site to see more. She’s incredible.

Adriana and her team make these adorable little elephants! I’m obsessed.

Mini Makerie Color Wheel

First things first, we gathered our color wheels. Adriana taught us all about color: hue, saturation, and brightness. This is my wheel, with all the colors and their different iterations laid out. I clearly don’t like pink.

On day two we made a sampler and learned a dozen stitches. Since I’m already a stitcher, I knew some of them, but Adriana has a really particular way of doing them, so I feel like it was all new information. We were so busy that I didn’t get a picture of them, and Teryn wasn’t around so sadly they are lost to the wind. That’s okay though, some things don’t need to be photographed to be special.

On the other hand, this wall in boulder begs to be shared. They painted it last summer and I finally tricked someone into taking pictures of me in front of it before we went to dinner at one of my favorite Boulder restaurants, pizzeria locale (thanks, mom!).

One of the things I love most about embroidery is that it is firmly rooted in history. The first embroideries were in China during the warring states period, and the art has flourished from there. Almost every culture in the world has some sort of decorative stitching and I have so many thoughts and feelings about it. I have written multiple school papers on it. I’m not kidding.

On day three we embroidered the heads and shells of this adorable little plush armadillos! How stinking cute are they?

Recap: Ali & Emily should be dictators; armadillo feet are cuter detached than on.

Friday Finds: Hello, Sunshine!

Happy Friday dudes and dudettes! Where has July gone?! Honestly, July is the best month I’ve had in over a year, and I’m trying to relish every second of it. This video is a travel guide for the Village but it feels more like a love letter to my neighborhood than anything else. I live close to and frequent a lot of these spots and I teared up watching the video because I’m an uncontrollable sap monster.

To start, I want to share with everyone who doesn’t already know that my Crafternoon was featured on the HGTV Blog! Thanks HGTV, and especially my friend Kristine, who pitched and wrote the article!

In addition, I started blogging for Quirk Books, an awesome, independent publishing company. My first post went live this week, with 8 DIY Book Projects. Expect to see way more from me over there.

Loved this piece about “finding” your voice from the always amazing Alexandra Franzen.

This video is everything I never knew I wanted.

Little known fact about me: I like to call everyone sunshine. I think it’s a cute pet-name for people. So when I saw this phone case, I knew I had to have it

Just read this “what I’m instagramming vs. what’s happening” article today and lol’d really hard. Guilty!

Sorry this week’s post is so short, I’ve just got lots of other things cooking up for you. If you want to hear more from me, follow me on Instagram or Tumblr.

Friday Finds: Gold & Sparkles & Parties

Photo of my favorite street in New York City beautifully captured by Erin Kim
Happy Friday my lovelies! I hope you have the most amazing weekend planned- I know I do!
I want to start out this week’s Friday Finds with a shout out: I’ve committed to the 7-week Liberation course run by John O’Mahoney– with a twist! He’s doing it for $0 and a gift as a run-up to burning man and a celebration of his abundance. I’ve worked with some seriously top-tier fitness professionals and John is by far the most positive and fun, as well knowing his sh*t up one side and down the other, and providing a kick-ass workout, natch. Check him out!

This printed tote bag is so cute I might have to make one.

Gold Temporary Tattoos! This is not a drill!

A little reminder for when you think you’re not good enough.

Sprinkles are the glitter of the food world.

Gorg crochet necklaces.

Printing has been catching my eye this week. I loved this wood block printed scarf / cover up from Peas and Needles.

Tea lovers unite!

I am all about no-sew projects, and these vinyl pouches would make the perfect sunglasses or gadget case.

The Etsy Craft Party in Boulder was so much fun, and Two Hands Paperie did a lovely recap of it on their blog.

TV Shows You Should Watch + Crafts to Go With Them

Making & watching TV go together like wine & cheese: there’s no way to do it wrong (are you sensing a theme on this blog? This is a judgement free making zone!) but there are definitely ways to do it oh-so-right. Now, imagine me in my best snooty-sommelier voice, recommending the very best craft and DIY pairings.

1. Downton Abbey

If the craft you desire to work on is embroidery, may I suggest the British TV classic, Downton Abbey. A calm base of family dynamics in the midst of quickly evolving early 20th century Britain has notes of intense drama and tear-jearking moments of both the happy and sad variety.

2. Parks and Recreation

Office dynamics and small town antics are the driving force of this NBC sit-com. Though not for everyone, but those who enjoy the not-so-subtle humor of Parks and Recreation are a die hard bunch. With 6 seasons available online and a 7th starting in the fall, you’ll have plenty of time to “treat yo’ self” to glitter-ifying anything your heart desires.

3. Firefly

Ahh, a sci-fi lover, I see. Well then I would definitely recommend the cult classic, Firefly. This witty, gritty show about “space cowboys” will warm your heart and keep you in stitches. To stick with the futuristic theme, I suggest working on a wearable electronics project, like this sparkle skirt from Adafruit.

4. Bob’s Burgers

I can tell that what you’re after is an amazing comedy about a tight-knit family, complete with well-rounded child characters, plenty of poop jokes, and fort building. Bob’s Burgers is a grown-up animated series that’s probably appropriate for your middle-school aged child, so why not try a project best served family-style, like making patches or building a lego crane?

5. Bomb Girls

Like Orange is the New Black, this show takes women and places them somewhere we don’t usually think about them: working in a bomb factory. Bomb Girls is an imported Canadian variety that features strong female friendships, canonically queer characters, and historical context. A perfect pairing for this rare show would be making your own (usually) factory made items like shampoo, hand lotion, and, of course, bath bombs.

Well, there you have it! My recommendations for the best crafting & TV pairings out there! All of these shows can be found on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Instant, and many of them can be found on more than one!

Friday Finds for 7/4

Happy 4th y’all! I hope you’re having a lovely day grilling and BBQing and laying by various bodies of water and watching fireworks! I have mixed feelings about the holiday but I love me some BBQ and watermelon and sky explosions, so I’ll take it. Here’s some stuff for you to check out on your day off!

Sometimes I see a Pinterest DIY and think maaaybe you shouldn’t cover that with glitter. This champagne bottle hack is definitely not one of those thing.

I think the 80/20 rule is a really sane way of living your life- here’s a great (practical!) guide to making it happen for yourself.

My personal pop culture hell is watching TV with people who want to talk through it, and also football games. I know that makes me a bad American, but damn.

As both a Game of Throne fan and a Frozen fan, this was truly the best thing I saw all week.

Brit & Co has a beginner electronics class! Someone take it and report back to me.

#radicalSelfLoveJuly  is a movement on Instagram and you should get in on it!

Where was this 3 months ago when I moved?!

I loved looking at these hammock bear approved hammocks.

This chicken and apple salad was so freaking good. Did you know there’s gluten-free panko? It changes everything.

Have a great weekend!

Don’t Shop at Hobby Lobby: 10 Places to Get Your Crafting Supplies

Image From Oh So Beautiful Paper

I can’t remember the last time I shopped at Hobby Lobby, and they’re usually completely off my radar but yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling that exempts religious companies from the contraceptive mandate part of the Affordable Care Act, they’ve jumped back into view giving crafting enthusiasts a bad-rap. Instead of ranting about how fu**ed up the ruling is, I’ll channel my disappointment into something more productive. Here are 10 brick-and-mortar and online places to get all the supplies your heart desires. Without further ado, here is a quick and dirty list of places that are not Hobby Lobby:

1. Michael’s

2. Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft stores

3. Etsy Craft Supplies

4. Whimseybox

5. Brit + Co

6. Paper Source

7. M&J Trimming

8. Purl Soho

Crafternoon in Washington Square Park

Do they look real yet? When you do a crafternoon, it’s best to think about things to do that are collaborative, easy to pick up and put down, and are hard to mess up. So, on Saturday afternoon, some friends and I gathered in Washington Square Park to play and make a craft that checks all those boxes: paper flowers!

Picnic & Craft SuppliesSupplies came from all over: left over dyed coffee filters from the Sweet Paul Makerie, a kit from Paper Source, and my May Whimseybox kit. I don’t know about you, but my crafting cupboard runneth over, and this was stuff I wasn’t going to use anyways, so it made sense to use it. Unlike my cookie party, it was a really thrifty & quick way to throw a party. Make hosting a crafternoon more affordable by using supplies you already have. [tweet it!]

Imperfection is perfection when it comes to handmade goods [tweet it!], so use whatever you have lying around to make your Crafternoon a success.

Crafternoon 1Of course, friends make the magic. Kristine took a break from flower-making to take some pictures, Erin multitasks & eats a cookie.

Crafternoon 2Katie builds her bloom, Helen & Edward continue to be the cutest best friends there ever were.

DSC_0956We joked all afternoon that Erin “won” the afternoon with her incredible flowers.

DSC_0985In the end, I think our littler garden turned out quite cute! Thanks everyone for making this crafternoon a success!

Friday Finds: Art T-Shirts & Getting Old & Summer Salad

Screen Shot 2014-06-27 at 5.09.47 PM

Happy Summer you all! The boyfriend and I are house-sitting for his sister in Brooklyn this week/weekend, and it seriously feels like vacation in all the good ways (sleeping in, beach visits, quiet), and being at home in all the good ways (cooking our own food, playing with dogs).

These FLY ART t-shirts from Rad have been the light of my life this week. I ordered one, can you guess which?

I found this site a few weeks ago, and now I”m freaking out about being old at the ripe age of 21.

Were you wise with the way you watched Orange Is the New Black or did you speed through it in 2 days like me? I can’t wait for season 3, but in the mean time, I’ll watch Uzo Adoba audition for every part.

Nerding out over this social data visualization tool.

These pictures literally took my breath away.

At 25, Jason DiSilva got MS and continued living his life and being honest about it.

Manic Pixie Panic:

But just because I like cute stuff doesn’t mean I’m shallow, or that I live to make guys feel more adventurous and deep. For example, I would never ask a guy to lie down in the street with me and look at the stars, because I don’t want to get hit by a car. I’m way too cynical to ever fall in love with a boy over a mixtape. And to be honest I find cupcakes kind of stupid.

Britney Spears is so insanely fascinating. She’s currently living under a conservatorship left over from her 2007 break down, which means is that she’s a 32 year old mother of two children who has no legal control over her life or career. Here are some great articles about the issue.

David Sedaris on living the Fitbit life.

Usually recipes I find on Pinterest are one-offs that I don’t make again, but this Kale Citrus Salad (which I refer to as “that orange jalepeño salad from Pinterest”) has been on constant rotation, and we’re even having it tonight!

Have an AMAZING weekend everyone and I will see you next week!
