Hi! I’m Whitney Penn! I live in New York City with my laptop, my embroidery needles, and too much glitter. My blood-boiling passions include writing, hand-making things, traveling, and feminism. I started this blog, originally called Crafty in the City, as a way to share my passions.

At 18 years old, I packed my bags and moved from Colorado to New York City to attend NYU. I’m currently in my final year, and I study New Media Writing, a combination of computer science, creative writing, and media studies. I also work at a really cute coffee shop in the West Village and intern two days/week at a small company you may have heard of on their e-commerce team.

During a health struggle in the spring of 2013, I discovered the healing powers of embroidery, which opened my eyes to the wide world of making. I am fond of saying that embroidery changed my life.

From embroidery, I discovered the wider world of making. I’ve made paper flowers for HGTV.com and hoop art for Quirk Books. I love to make things, and I want to inspire you to make them too!
